Formę pytającą otrzymujemy przestawiając czasownik "be" na pierwsze miejsce. Formę przeczącą otrzymujemy przez zastosowanie wyrazu "not", który stawiamy po czasowniku posiłkowym "be".

Are you reading a detective story?

Nie wymaga pełnej odpowiedzi –

Yes, I am reading a detective story.

Wystarczy powiedzieć –

(twierdząco) Yes, I am.
(przecząco) No, I am not.

Albo po prostu –

Yes.
No.

Pytania szczegółowe tworzymy zachowując szyk przestawny (inwersję).

a/ What is Mr Stone reading?


He is reading a newspaper.

b/ Where is Sheila doing shopping?

She is doing shopping at the baker's (shop).

Niekiedy używa się w Present Continous określeń jak – now, just now czy at the moment itp.

Sheila is doing shopping now.
He is writing a letter at the moment.
